Add-ons slowly upgraded for Firefox 3

Mozilla Firefox

The current version of Firefox 3 (release candidate 2) loads faster, looks nicer and generally outperforms Firefox 2, but it suffers from one problem: many of the handiest Firefox add-ons haven’t been upgraded for the next-generation browser.

(Add-ons are miniature bits of software that users can download to make Firefox perform extra tasks such as blocking advertisements or searching price comparisons for the lowest price of any product you look up at a big shopping site.)

Fortunately, some of the best add-ons are starting to add Firefox 3 functionality. Google Gears, which lets you use Google Reader and productivity apps from Google and Zoho — even when you’re not connected to the Net — appeared today.

And Skype just released a Firefox 3 version of my favorite add-on: a program to scours every Web page you see for telephone numbers and then puts each in a click-to-call button.
