Microsoft My Phone now live, in screenshots

We won’t see Windows Mobile 6.5 or Windows Marketplace until the end of the year, but Microsoft isn’t hoarding all the goodies — the My Phone sync service went live in beta last night, and users who pre-registered got invites. Go on and sign up and let us know what you think, or just hit the link and check it all out in screenshots.

Yup, Microsoft Are Opening Microsoft Retail Stores [Microsoft]

Last month, we took a tour of Microsoft’s “fake” retail store. Meant to show what it would look like “if” Microsoft ever decided to open a dedicated store. Like the ones they’re now actually opening.

The company have announced that, yes, they’re going to follow Apple into the dedicated retail space, and will be opening an undisclosed number of stores across the US. The chain will be overseen by David Porter, formerly of Dreamworks Animation, who was hired by Microsoft this week to act as vice president of retail stores.

No word yet on what the stores will actually sell, but since the concept store was full of Xbox and Games for Windows stuff, we’d be expecting the actual stores to follow suit.

Firefox Mobile Available for HTC Touch Pro, Windows Mobile Phones [Downloads]

Firefox’s mobile browser, Fennec, is available in “milestone” (read: very alpha) downloads for HTC Touch Pro phones, but also most any Windows Mobile phone running at VGA (480×640). Early reports say it’s working, if slow.

As the Mozilla team itself notes, this release has plug-ins disabled, features no soft keyboard input, doesn’t allow for program or add-on updating, and a few other “punts” made to get a working release out. Still, if you want to test out Fennec’s unique navigation and mobile browsing helpers and you’ve got a Windows Mobile phone, it could be worth a try—even if web site loading is not exactly snappy at this point.

Fennec is a free download, built for the HTC Touch Pro but capable of running on Windows Mobile phones. A direct CAB link can be found right under the “Installation” heading in the link below.

Exploding cellphone battery that killed Chinese man was actually a gun

While some of the details still seem to be up in the air at the moment, it looks like that exploding cellphone battery that killed a man shopping at a Lenovo store in mainland China a couple of weeks back was actually not a cellphone battery at all, but rather an actual firearm of some sort. According to some roughly translated reports from Sohu.com, the “imitation firearm with bullets” suddenly fell to the ground at one point, which caused the bullets to fire up into the man’s chest and neck arteries, leading to massive blood loss. The Telegraph newspaper further adds that the gun, which they describe as a home-made pistol, also damaged the man’s cellphone when it went off, leading to the initial suspicion that the battery may be to blame. So there you have it, folks, while cellphones may or may not kill people, guns (makeshift or otherwise) certainly do.

ASUS N81Vg: first laptop with NVIDIA’s GeForce GT 120M

Not quite an ultraportable, but not quite a behemoth — the 14-inch ASUS N81Vg fits nicely between the two laptop extremes, and given that it’s the first to house NVIDIA’s GeForce GT 120M graphics card, even gamers can feel free to sneak a deathmatch or two in between conference calls. The rig itself can be ordered with one of many Core 2 Duo processors, up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM, upwards of 500GB of hard drive space, an optional Blu-ray burner, 1.3 megapixel webcam and a battery good for three to four hours. The newfangled 120M GPU features NVIDIA CUDA technology, 32 processing cores, DirecX 10 support, 1080p video playback and 110 gigaflops of computing power. Per usual, ASUS is keeping quiet when it comes to pricing and release details, but it ought not be long now, tiger.

New iPhone 4G Concept Is Son of MacBook Air and iPod Touch [Apple]

This beautiful concept, inspired by the curves and tapering of the Macbook Air coupled with the touch’s back, is even better than the cool Macbook-inspired iPhone 4G we featured at the beginning of the month.

The thing that excites me most about these concepts, however, is not the aesthetic aspect of it. It’s the the front camera and the fact that people seem to be excited about getting videoconferencing on the iPhone. Specially about the idea of interacting with desktop videoconferencing software on both the PC and the Mac. This is a must for the videochat feature to be really useful, and personally I think it’s one of the reasons it hasn’t been done by Apple before.

My hope is that they are working to make it crossplatform, either with Apple releasing iChat for the PC at one point or, ideally, working on the connection with existing PC videoconferencing software like MSN and Skype…

Google Sync debuts for iPhone, Windows Mobile and SyncML devices

Google just announced a new service for pushing Gmail contacts and Google Calendar updates to mobile devices. For iPhone and Windows Mobile devices Google is using Exchange ActiveSync with some limitations due to the beta nature of the service, but it’ll also work on many other devices that support SyncML (a vendor list is here). Google Sync works automatically, and replaces all existing contact and calendar information on the device, so sync-er beware — we wouldn’t let Google get close to our contacts without some serious preflight cleanup and maintenance. Google Apps users can enable the service per domain. There’s an explanatory video after the break.

Asus Eee PC 1000HE Review Roundup

Well, kids, it looks like the Asus Eee PC 1000HE has started making the rounds and so far the reviews have been rather favorable. PC Review was so taken by the machine, in fact, that they declared it the “best one yet… dethron[ing] the MSI Wind as the leader of the pack.” Their enthusiasm is stoked by the fact that the machine’s been designed around its new six-cell battery (making for something less bulky than, say, the 10-inch Aspire One or the NC10-14GB). Also in the win column are the obvious design improvements over its predecessor, and its hard to beat $400 street price. That said, it is a netbook: the new Intel Atom N280 processor offers “no real performance benefits” over the N270, the features are pretty standard for a machine of its class (160GB HDD, three USB ports, a webcam, VGA out, 4-in-1 card reader and the usual ethernet and WiFi connectivity) and testing failed to find “any performance differences between the 1000HE and systems like the Wind, the Aspire One (10-inch), and the HP 2140.” Also according to the magazine, the new software-based overclocking feature is no great shakes. Laptop Magazine feels pretty much the same way, loving the new keyboard, the new battery, and the fact the easy-access panel (for HDD and RAM upgrades and the like) is still intact. On the other hand, they point out that the thing’s a little heavy (3.2 pounds) — but what do you expect from a machine that boasts over 7 hours battery life? Notebook Review singles the thing out for its design: “Build quality,” it says “is very good with strong, durable plastics used throughout the body,” and the new keyboard and gloss black paint “really adds another level of class and style to this netbook.” But don’t take our word for it — hit the read links for the full reviews, and be sure to check out the gallery below.
